Privacy Policy

OverView is a macOS application made by Memetic Research Laboratories LLC (“we”, “us”). It works on your own Mac, and uses a cloud AI model to understand what you say and to read, describe and answer. This policy says plainly what stays on your Mac, what is sent and to whom, and the little we keep. OverView has no advertising, analytics or third-party tracking, and we don’t sell data.
What stays on your Mac
These are kept in OverView’s folder (Application Support) and the macOS Keychain, and are not sent to us:
- Pictures from the camera and the pages you save, and the text read from them.
- The emails and texts OverView reads: email through its Mail extension, texts from the Messages database when you turn that on and allow Full Disk Access.
- Contacts, looked up on your Mac to find people by name.
- What you ask OverView to remember, and the record of your conversations, so you can ask “what did we talk about yesterday?”. You can go off the record, or ask it to forget.
- Your search index, settings and diagnostic reports (crash and performance reports from macOS, saved on your Mac and never uploaded).
- Keys and sign-in tokens, in the Keychain.
OverView’s voice runs on your Mac. Understanding your speech uses Apple’s speech recognition, which may send audio to Apple under Apple’s privacy policy.
What goes to the AI
To answer you, OverView sends the AI model what you say, and the content you ask about: an email or text, the window you’re reading, a file, a note, or a picture from the camera. Before it leaves your Mac:
- Personal details are replaced with placeholders. Phone numbers, email addresses, account and card numbers, dates of birth and postal addresses become tokens like [[PHONE_1]], and are filled back in on your Mac. People’s names are not replaced, so OverView can find them in Contacts.
- Pictures are redacted on your Mac. Card numbers, social security numbers and dates of birth are covered before a picture is sent.
The AI is reached in one of two ways:
- OverView’s AI service (the default). We run a small service that passes your requests to OpenRouter, which routes them only to AI providers that keep no copy of your requests (zero data retention). The service doesn’t log or store what you send or what comes back. OpenRouter sees a scrambled identifier for your Mac, not your name, email or IP address.
- Your own OpenRouter account. If you add your own OpenRouter key in Settings, requests go straight from your Mac to OpenRouter under your account and its settings, and never pass through our service.
What we keep
For OverView’s AI service to give each Mac a fair free allowance and stop abuse, we keep:
- a random ID for your Mac, created by OverView (not tied to your name or Apple ID), and the AI key we issue for it;
- how much of the allowance it has used;
- a count of new installs per network address per day, to limit automated sign-ups.
When you join the beta, we keep your email address to send the download link. Our distribution system stores only a hashed form of it and of the download token.
Other services you can use
- Web search (Brave). If you add a Brave Search key, your search questions go to Brave.
- Sending messages. Texts and emails you approve are sent through Apple’s Messages and Mail apps, on your Mac.
- The natural voice. OverView downloads its voice model from Hugging Face. Only the model files are transferred; no personal data is sent.
Your choices
- Add your own OpenRouter key to keep your requests out of our service entirely.
- Reading texts is off until you turn it on and allow Full Disk Access.
- Say “off the record” to stop keeping the conversation, “forget that” to remove a memory, or “forget everything we’ve talked about”.
- To remove everything, delete OverView and its folder at ~/Library/Application Support/OverView. To have your Mac’s ID and usage removed from our service, email us.
Children
OverView is not directed to children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect information from them.
Changes to this policy
We’ll update this policy as OverView changes, with a new “Last updated” date.
